Our Profile

Dublin North City Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS) was founded in 1996 and became operational in September 1997. Dublin North City MABS provides a service primarily to low-income families who are in debt or at risk of getting into debt, to facilitate them to cope with their immediate debt problem and become financially independent in the long term.

Dublin North City MABS is funded and supported by the Citizens Information Board (CIB). A Board of Directors drawn from Statutory and Voluntary Bodies that work in the area is responsible for managing the service. The members of Dublin North City MABS current management committee come from Cluid Housing, Community Garda, local Credit Unions, Department of Social & Family Affairs, Health Service Executive, the Larkin Centre for the Unemployed and the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul.

The service relocated to 53 Upper Dorset Street, Dublin 1 in May 2009 and the now central location makes the service easily accessible to the public and has eliminated the need to operate on outreach facility.

The service employs a Co-ordinator, two full-time Money Advisers and an Office Administrator. The service devotes most of its resources to working with clients on a one to one basis. In addition to providing this core service it is also an objective of Dublin North City MABS to facilitate in-house community education designed to meet the specific needs of the target group.

Our aim is to:

• Enable people to regain control of their finances
  
  
• Educate the client in essential practical budgeting skills and money management so that they can meet day-to-day expenses and repay debt
  
  
• Negotiate with creditors as necessary
  
  
• Help with setting up special accounts with Credit Unions
  
  
• Provide a special budget account facility for clients who do not hold Credit Union membership
  
  
• Help clients to identify sources of credit that suit their needs
  
  
• Provide ongoing support to people who successfully overcome their financial difficulties
  
  
• Raise awareness of the MABS service by means of information sessions and promote good money management through education programmes to local community groups
  
  
• Work towards social change, especially in the areas of poverty, debt and access to credit.
